Buying a vehicle

You can search for vehicles by manufacturer from the home page, through the vehicle finder panel on the left hand side of the page or by clicking on the advanced search link. Alternatively, you can click on the 'Buy' tab and view all live auctions.

When you have found a vehicle you are interested in, you can view the listing information. This should include everything you need to know about the vehicle, from the details of the auction (i.e. the level of current bidding, the minimum next bid and the time the auction is due to end) through to the vehicle details and description.

There's an appraisal chart that shows any damage to the vehicle and you can view any images that the seller has taken.

We suggest you look out for the vehicle location as vehicles can be located anywhere in the UK. .
For your convenience we have added a 'reputation' section within the listing so that you can see how the member has been rated for buying and selling. We would encourage all members to give feedback as this will only enhance the quality of information supplied when a vehicle is listed and will ensure that all adhere to the rules..

Bidding on a vehicle

You can bid on a vehicle from the listing page by entering your bid amount in the box provided and clicking 'Place Bid'. You will be asked to confirm you are happy to make the bid. Bidding increments are £50 for vehicles up to the value of £5000 and £100 for vehicles above this value.

You should bid at the price you are prepared to pay for the vehicle and once the reserve (if applicable) has been met the site will automatically bid up to that level for you. For example, if reserve has been met and the next bid is £10,000 and you are prepared to pay £12,000 then you should enter £12,000. The site will then bid up to that value every time you are outbid.

When you place a new bid, the site will inform you if you are the highest bidder, if you have been outbid by someone else or if your bid has not met the reserve price set by the seller. You can place a new bid at any time.

When you place a bid always allow an additional £100 of work which may not have been noted on the original vehicle appraisal and always bear in mind that the older the vehicle the more unseen work that may be needed.

You will be notified by email on the following occasions:

  • You have been outbid on an auction
  • You have won an auction
  • You have lost an auction

When you win an auction, your email will contain a link into the 'My MTA' section of the site where you will be able to find the details for you to contact the seller.

Selling a vehicle

Selling a vehicle through Motortradeauction.com couldn't be easier. Log in to the site and click on the 'Sell' tab at the top left hand side of the page. You will then be able to provide all of your vehicle details.

Make your listing as comprehensive as possible to help sell the vehicle.

This should include service dates and mileages, cambelt change date if applicable and listing as much detail regarding damage or work needed to avoid disagreements on collection. You can include any extras and there is a free text box for other items you may want to include. The more information you give the better the prices you'll achieve.

You can mark any damage to the vehicle on our interactive vehicle appraisal system.

Having completed your vehicle details, you can then choose a starting price for the auction, a reserve price (the lowest price you are prepared to accept for the vehicle), the time you want your auction to start and how long you want your auction to last.

We encourage you to make sure the auction finishes on a working day and at a reasonable time within office hours so as to achieve the best possible number of bidders.

You can upload up to 6 images of your vehicle. You should include any pictures of specific extras or damage that you think need to be clear.

You get the opportunity to preview all of the information and can then make the listing live.

However, before listing the vehicle, you will have the option of saving to 'Draft' enabling you to come back to the details at a later stage, very useful if you suddenly become busy, make any changes you wish and then list the vehicle.

You will also have the opportunity to use our 'Schedule' facility enabling you to list vehicles out of working hours and setting the start time for the following morning.

When selling a vehicle, you will be notified by email on the following occasions:

  • When a new listing has gone live
  • When an item you have listed has met its reserve price
  • When an item you have listed has been sold

When you successfully sell a vehicle you will be sent an email with a link into the 'My MTA' section of the site where you will be able to find the details for you to contact the buyer.
